History

The first Ruke craft fair was organised in 2005. Its originator was Milina Kovačević, Program Director from Herceg Fest. She was supported by volunteers, artists and crafts enthusiasts from Herceg Novi.

Objectives

• Promote arts & crafts in the area
• Introduce local artesans
• Engage children and young people in arts and crafts activities by means of organising creative workshops
• Introduce different craft techniques to the children and adults
• Instigate collaboration between the individuals and organisations involved in arts & crafts activities, in Montenegro and between the ex Yugoslav countries
• Promote & help revive traditional crafts
• Encourage more people to engage in creative activities in their spare time
• Add different content to the tourist offering of the area

Event Concept

Ruke is spread over 6 days, each day offering different creative activities and events. The following activities are planned:

• Creative Workshops for kids and adults.
• Connecting participants through evening activities and gatherings. This is an important aspect as it contributes towards establishing a national identity for creating handcrafts in Montenegro as well as instigate international dialogue and stimulate partnerships.
• The Craft Fair will exhibit works by both professional and amateur craftsmen and women who will be encouraged to demonstrate their techniques to the audience.
